FEAR

Once I was afraid of dying
Being killed by my grandmother
Because I used to stay in trouble

Yet, I’m still here

Once I was afraid of being a nerd forever,
The kids at school used to roast me
Constantly talking about my 3900 gym shoes
And my tight corduroy pants

But I survived

Once I was afraid of dying a virgin
My friends always got on my case
Cuz I didn’t have a pager
Cuz I didn’t wear Guess or Girbauds
Cuz I wasn’t thuggin on the corner
Selling drugs and spitting in the face of my ancestors

Now I am afraid of being a failure
Because I am stuck around that constantly

My house echoes smoke
From past and present fires
Which have all been extinguished
by heroin, weed, and Hennessy

I look at my mom
And aunts
And cousins
And see them all living in the past
I don’t want that to be me
LORD HELP ME!!

Fear shall only fade when you confront it.

A Great Community

Clean streets and people that care
Who don’t give up and always share
Plants, glass and trees
And flowers for the birds and bees
Nice cars for everyone
In the inside, it looks like fun
People who like each other
And speak to one another
Schools where teachers make learning fun
And there is room for everyone
No gangs, no fights, no police lights
And people can be safe at night
No trash, no bottles, no broken glass
Where we can run and play on grass
At night when I go to sleep
This is my community

People

Wonder what we call people these days?
We call them ignorant and that’s going to stay the same…
trying to kill us because we got more fame.
Killing us but, they are to blame.
When we snitch on them, it’s nothing…
But when they snitch on us, the police love it
They love to see people like us in jail
We can stay there all year but, those people make bail just for saying please to those kind of police they will automatically let them release
While they eat our bread
we’re eating crackers and bologna so we can sit in jail
all of our lives and suffer
Revenge when an ignorant person dies
So what I’m saying in this poem is we should not be judged
By the way we were born

Concept

iAspire, Incorporated is a nonprofit organization which provides educational resources, services and supplemental items to minority students in urban school districts. We promote academic achievement, higher education, student leadership and entrepreneurship. Our free online magazine offers middle and high school students tools to meet and exceed academic standards by providing them with enjoyable, online curricular activities while connecting education with technology. It provides information for post secondary and career choices, community news, organizations and entertainment. The website also includes original content on health and nutrition; personal and financial enrichment; and success stories about minorities who have overcome some of the same odds our readers face everyday. We profile notable African American corporate professionals, executives and entrepreneurs, and encourage them to serve as online mentors to students interested in similar careers. Up-and-coming teens are also acknowledged for their extraordinary achievements.
