Kevin Gillespie: A True Lion of Distinction
“Always strive to reach your dream, because without the will to strive, you will not achieve anything.”
Armed with his mother’s love, security and support, Kevin Gillespie is well on his way to establishing a sound future for himself. Academically, he has distinguished himself from his peers at William H. Lemmel Middle School despite the ills within his community. His upbringing, like many others, had some very good times and some bad times, too.
Kevin’s parents were divorced by the time he was five years old, leaving his mother to raise his older sister. The family moved to Baltimore so that his mother could get a better job and living opportunities. This move helped Kevin concentrate on his education and succeed in school.
His academic background has always been very good—and consistent. “I have had some hard times in school, but when I put my mind to it, I am able to work hard and achieve success in every class,” he explains.
When Kevin’s family moved to Baltimore, he went to St. Ambrose catholic school from 2nd until 6th grade where he received a tuition scholarship due to his above average academic ability. In 7th grade, Kevin was enrolled at William H. Lemmel Middle School where he won the highest honors for grade achievement (Lion of Distinction). He was also inducted into the Junior National Honor Society (JNHS). He has attained great honor of recognition.
As an intellectual 8th grader, Kevin reflects when asked what drives and inspires him as a student. With a thoughtful response, Kevin states “the fact that I am able to achieve a lot more than most of the other students that surround me. I want to he very successful in life.”
His plans for tomorrow include attending an Ivy League college to earn masters and doctorate degrees in political science and law. He aspires to become a lawyer, which will help him launch a political career. This ambitious youngster proceeds, “My true goal and dream is to become the first African American president of the United States.” Watch out Barack Obama.
Before wrapping up, Kevin reveals the best advice that was given to him: “No matter what my surroundings, I should always do my best!”
In closing, he shares a few words of encouragement with his peers. “Always strive to reach your dream, because without the will to strive, you will not achieve anything.”
