FASHION 101
Submitted by Saran Fossett, CEO/Owner Reign Model Management
Fashion, when defined means- The make or form of anything; the
style, shape, appearance, or mode of structure; pattern, model; as, the fashion of the ark, of a coat, of a house, of an altar, etc.; workmanship;
execution. Style is fashion, personalized. Style is a mode of presentation, especially in fashion, music or any of the fine arts; a characteristic of peculiar mode of developing in idea or accomplishing a result.
Even in our most modest state, we make a fashion statement. In fashion, a statement can be made without a word being said, and we should all think about what we are saying through our appearance. Even if you say you don’t care about fashion and don’t dress to make a statement, you are making a statement – which says… “I don’t care about fashion.”
It is often said that you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Our first impression carries a lot of weight. And, it’s usually based solely on our outward appearance, our fashion presentation. To some, it may seem shallow, but it really speaks volumes. Fashion is relevant in our society. It is a means to create opportunities for ourselves, or have doors slammed in our faces.
Fashion reveals your personality as well as if your thinking is modern and flexible or traditional and stiff (e.g. willingness to accept change and process new ideas). It has escapist qualities and can help you deal with the pressures of the world (For example: our country is at war, but you can “escape” by dressing in bright colors, light, airy, fun, quirky concepts, that make you look like you don’t have a care in the world). Through fashion, you exude statements of power, self-confidence, shyness, and creativity.
Everything you put on sends a message. What message(s) are you sending? What do people think when they look at you? I want to share some fashion rules to assist you in making the statement you desire:
- You wear the clothes, not the other way around.
- Less is more. Accessories and furnishings (shoes, jewelry, handbags, belts, etc.) define an outfit. Too much going on at once can kill a fashion concept and have your clothes overshadowing you. That is the ultimate fashion faux pas (DON’T).
- Because they make it in your size, does not mean you should wear it. This rule applies to everyone! We have the misconception that only fuller, curvier people should be cautious about what they wear, but nothing is further from the truth. The thought that thin equals the opportunity to wear any- and everything is also a misconception. Some fashion, depending on your body type, just doesn’t work, nor is it appropriate for all. Work what works for you!
- Know you fashion limitations, and work with them! In order to be fashionable, you must know your body type, know your correct sizes, know what colors work for your skin tone and have the confidence to put it on and believe it is working for you.
- Investing in quality often means investing in things you can’t see. The hand-stitched uppers on your shoes, the lining in your slacks, the weight of the fabric, the movement inside a mechanical watch, these things make the difference in quality, thus the difference in price.
